Mental Health Awareness Month: Honoring Joy, Community, and Collective Healing
May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to reflect, reconnect, and recommit to the practices, people, and places that support our emotional well-being. While conversations about mental health often (and rightfully) center around symptoms, diagnoses, and access to care, this month also invites us to look at something equally essential but often overlooked: joy and community as pathways to healing.
At Healgood, we believe that mental health isn’t only about reducing distress — it’s about increasing connection, expression, and meaning. One of the most powerful antidotes to disconnection and isolation is being seen, heard, and held in community.
Reframing Mental Health: Not Just What’s “Wrong,” But What’s Needed
Mental health isn't just about crisis response — it’s about nurturing what helps us thrive. Sometimes that’s therapy. Sometimes it’s medication. And sometimes it’s a dance floor, a paintbrush, a journal, or an open mic full of kindred spirits, where shared creativity fosters authentic connection
So as we honor Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s ask ourselves:
What brings me joy that I don’t give myself enough time for?
Where do I feel most myself — most free?
Who are the people that make me feel safe to show up as I am?
And let’s remember: healing can look like vulnerability, laughter, or movement. This is why we’re excited to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month by supporting a powerful event and space for collective healing:

(YOU)nity Nights: Headspace & Heartspace – A Creative Wellness Open Mic
Hosted by our friends at Danzversity, this monthly event is centered around creativity, connection, and emotional expression. This month’s edition — “Headspace & Heartspace” — is an open mic experience inviting participants to share poetry, dance, song, storytelling, and art as a form of wellness and release. Come to witness, come to move, come to be moved. I’m excited to be a part of the event and performing with an amazing group Unity in Motion Collective (UIMC), a dance collective committed to creating purposeful, heart-led movement that uplifts and unites!
We hope you’ll join us at (YOU)nity Nights on May 30 to witness and celebrate the ways creativity supports mental health. Come share your voice — or simply show up and hold space for others. You belong in the room.
From all of us at Healgood Holistic Counseling Center, thank you for being part of a community that values joy, justice, and healing — in all its forms.
